Biography
Dr. S. Jay McDuffie was born in Nettleton, Mississippi, grew up in Tupelo, and attended Tupelo High School. The son of a pharmacist, he was encouraged to study science in preparation to becoming a physician. At Mississippi State University, he earned a B. S. in premed, and then entered the U. S. Public Health Service during World War II. At the end of the war, he entered the University of Mississippi where he earned his medical certificate in their two- year program; then, he finished his M. D. degree and his clinical work at the University of Tennessee. In the early 1950s, Dr. McDuffie opened a medical clinic in Nettleton, and he has worked there ever since. He was the executive director of the Northeast Mississippi Medical Society for nine years. He worked with LIFT to provide free medical services to the needy. Presently, he is the medical director of the Mississippi State Hospital Mental Division, a branch of Whitfield Psychiatric Hospital.
