Biography
Dr. William A. Butts was born in 1933 near Kilmichael, Mississippi, to Sylvester and Virginia Butts. He was reared with seven brothers and sisters on the family farm and attended elementary school at Jones Chapel School. He graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1951. He completed two years of study at Mississippi Vocational College [ now Mississippi Valley State University] in Itta Bena before joining the U. S. Army in 1953. After completing a tour of duty, Dr. Butts separated from the armed services and returned to Mississippi Vocational College, where he was awarded a B. S. degree in political science in 1957.
Dr. Butts taught and served as assistant principal in Natchez schools, then went to Southern Illinois University to continue his education. After receiving his Ph. D. he returned to Mississippi Valley State as an instructor and assistant to the president, Dr. White. He also taught at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.
In 1975 Dr. Butts was appointed president of Kentucky State University, Frankfort, Kentucky. He is married to the former Clara Jane Coleman of Brookhaven, Mississippi, and they have two children.

| Description | Oral history.; Interview conducted on March 3, 1976 with Dr. William A. Butts at his office on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Butts was born in 1933 near Kilmichael, Mississippi. After graduating high school, he went on to complete two years of study at Mississippi Vocational College (now Mississippi Valley State University) in Itta Bena. In 1953, Butts joined the U.S. Army and after he completed his tour of duty he went on to earn his B.S. degree in political science in 1957. He received his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University and went on to teach at Mississippi Valley State and Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. In 1975, Butts was appointed president of Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. |
