Biography
Born in Sunflower, Mississippi, on August 20, 1920, Dr. Charlotte Siegel Kaplan was the youngest of three daughters of Sadie Courland Siegel and Samuel Siegel, both of whom had emigrated from Europe to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. In the Delta of Mississippi, the Siegels were members of a rather small but thriving Jewish community.
Dr. Kaplan grew up in Sunflower, attending grammar school there and high school in Moorhead. During Dr. Kaplan's childhood, her father owned a grocery store in Sunflower, Mississippi, and each member of the Siegel family worked there, including the children. Dr. Kaplan earned her A. A. from Sunflower Junior College, her B. A. in English from Delta State, her B. S. E. in business from Delta State, her M. S. in guidance and counseling from Delta State, and her doctorate in psychology from the University of Mississippi. She made her career in counseling, psychometry, and teaching as well as serving her community as a volunteer as president of the Women's Club, president of the Garden Club, president of Adath Israel Sisterhood, as well as in the Friends of the Library, Bolivar Medical Center, and FEMA.
On September 13, 1942, Charlotte Siegel married Louis Kaplan in the early days of the United States' engagement in World War II, during which he served in the Army for five years. In December of 1945, the Kaplans were reunited when Louis returned from the war, and they made their home in Cleveland, Mississippi, where they have lived since. Louis has been deceased since February, 1993. Dr. Charlotte Siegel Kaplan continues to reside in Cleveland, Mississippi. She has two children, Steven W. Kaplan and Nancy Kaplan Chiz.
