Biography
Lt. Col. Billie Hughes was born and raised in Mississippi. After working for the railroad industry, he became a Mississippi highway patrolman in 1964. Colonel Hughes served as a trooper through the height of racial tensions during the sixties.
Colonel Hughes is currently still working for the highway patrol. He is a resident of McComb, Mississippi.

This is an interview for the Mississippi Oral History Program of the University of Southern Mississippi with Lt. Col. Billie Hughes of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol. Mr. Hughes was interviewed on July 7, 1993 by Reid Derr, a doctoral student in history.
