Biography
Mr. M. W. Hamilton of Petal, Mississippi, was born in Hattiesburg in 1909 and lived in the area until his death in 1990. Mr. Hamilton worked as a mechanic, electrician and contractor in his youth. For many years, he operated a general merchandise store.
An early aviator, Mr. Hamilton earned his pilot rating in 1924. He flew with the famous aviator brothers, Al and Fred Key.
Mr. Hamilton is perhaps best known as one of the leaders of the Hattiesburg segregationists during the 1960s. He was a founding member of the Citizens Council in Hattiesburg and of Beason Academy, a whites- only school.
Mr. Hamilton was married to the former Jewel Clardy of Harvison, Mississippi. They had two children, a daughter who lives in Shreveport and a son who lives in Petal.
