Biography
Mr. Alvin L. Fielder Sr. was born December 7, 1900, five miles southeast of Hickory, Mississippi ( Newton County). His parents were Matilda Jones and a father he never knew. He took the name of the grandfather on his mother's side. He was the second youngest of eight children. Currently, he is residing in Meridian, Mississippi.
Mr. Fielder moved to Meehan Junction, Mississippi in 1913 and remained there until 1918, until he moved to Meridian, Mississippi. In 1918 he was a lumberyard saw miller for Merrell Lumber Company. He remained there for four years. He then took a job at Standard Drug Company in Meridian where he remained in steady employ until 1930. During this period of time he attended Haven Teachers College to finish his high school work from 1928 to 1930 ( six days a week, twelve months a year). In the fall of 1930 he entered the Meharry Medical School of Pharmacy where he finished in 1933. He successfully passed the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy in 1933. He then came back to work at Standard Drug Company until 1934. He opened his pharmacy in September 16, 1934, in partnership with a local physician, L. F. Brooks. It remained open until 1984.
He is a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and the Haven- Rust Club. He was an ardent fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. He was a member of the Mississippi Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association and is treasurer of the Mississippi Pharmaceutical Association.
He retired from active pharmaceutical work when his wife became ill in 1978. He continued part- time work up until 1983.
