Biography
Mr. C. J. Duckworth was born in Summerland, Mississippi, Smith County, on February 25, 1911 to Mr. Cleveland Duckworth and Mrs. Laura Jane ( Lott) Duckworth. Mr. Duckworth was reared in rural Smith County. He attended local schools and completed high school in Laurel, Mississippi, in 1933. He enrolled in Alcorn State College ( now Alcorn State University) but left early to accept a teaching position in Jasper County. He taught at Bay Springs, Tiak and Heidelberg, then entered the Army and served in France during World War II.
After the war Mr. Duckworth returned to Alcorn and graduated in 1948. He completed a master's degree at Tuskegee Institute in 1955 and conducted postgraduate work at the University of Oklahoma and Howard University. He taught and/ or served as principal in the public school systems in Heidelberg, Columbia, Pascagoula and Biloxi. He ran unsuccessfully for the post of state superintendent of education in 1975.
In 1966 Mr. Duckworth was elected president of the Mississippi Teachers Association and in that same year was elected president of the American Teachers Association. He served as Executive Secretary of the Mississippi Teachers Association from 1968- 1976, when it merged with the all- white Mississippi Education Association to form the Mississippi Association of Educators. Mr. Duckworth served as associate executive secretary in the new organization for one year.
Mr. Duckworth is married to the former Annette Posey of Summerland, Mississippi.
